Odessa graduates celebrate 55 year reunion
Odessa graduates celebrate 55 year reunion
ODESSA—For many Odessa Central School class of 1955 graduates, the 55th year reunion, held last Friday and Saturday, was a celebration not to be missed.  While the ‘55 graduating class has been holding reunions every five years, this 55 year reunion attracted many graduates who hadn’t been back to the area in a long while. It was the first reunion Carol Anne Clark attended, driving in from North Carolina.  “I haven’t been back since 1955. It was interesting to see who you recognized and who you don’t,” she said, adding there are many she didn’t recognize at first.  “I wouldn’t miss this for anything,” said Sandra Cunningham, who came from Ohio with her daughter and granddaughter for the reunion.  The graduating class had 63 people in it, with over 50 people attending the two day reunion. On Friday, Aug. 27, graduates toured the Odessa-Montour school, and then later had dinner. Two former teachers, Geraldine Goodnow and Jack Davis, were guests of honor. The next day, the former classmates had lunch and took a boat cruise at Captain Bill’s.  Marianne Martin O’Rourke explained that when they graduated, it wasn’t Odessa-Montour. She explained, “it was just Odessa high school then.” O’Rourke added she has brought an old yearbook to every class reunion. Read More ...

ODESSA—The Odessa Tea Party hosted two more candidates, George Richter and Paul Marcellus, Wednesday, Aug. 18.Both Richter and Marcellus are two of the republican candidates running for the 137th state assembly district.  About 30 people were in attendance for the meeting. Each candidate was given time for an introduction, and then answered questions. When asked about term limits, Richter said he agreed absolutely.  He said it seems to work fine for elected positions like state governor.  Marcellus said that with two-year terms, people get to vote on assembly members often.  He added that if a representative was doing a good job, he’d think people would want that person to stay elected.  However, Marcellus said that positions like assembly leader should have limits.  Both agreed in supporting people’s rights to bear arms.  Marcellus added he believes licensing is needed.  Richter said that the permitting process is too long. Read More ...
Odessa-Montour school board 8/12/10
ODESSA—  Business Manager Greg Dale spoke to the Odessa-Montour school board about the state passing its budget and the federal government approving emergency funds to schools.  However, he said he only had estimated or unofficial numbers at this point.  Dale said for state funds, the unofficial numbers looked like state aid will be close to the five percent cut Gov. David Paterson proposed.  This is what the district based its own budget on.  When it came to the federal money approved to save teaching positions, Dale said there are too many unknowns.  He said Odessa should get $200,000 for one year only.  Dale explained there has been no word when the funds will arrive, what the rules are, and if it will go through the state to be distributed. Read More ...

Odessa Fire Department celebrates 100 years
ODESSA—The community was invited to celebrate the Odessa Fire Department’s 100th anniversary, Saturday, July 10.  An open house was held, with old and new equipment, photos, archives, and videos on display.    Deputy Chief John D. Jelliff said in 1905 the community purchased a hand pumper and hose cart, which was also at the event.  Jelliff explained from 1905 to 1910, the Odessa community depended on volunteers to respond to fires using the pumper.  However, he said that just wasn’t working, so in 1910, the Odessa Fire Department was Incorporated.  That was what the anniversary was celebrating.  Jelliff said in 1911 the fire department started operating out of the Odessa Opera House, down the road from where the department currently is. Read More ...
