Museum considers sites in Yates, Schuyler
YATES, SCHUYLER COUNTIES—Five locations, four in Yates County and one in Schuyler County, are being considered for the site of a Finger Lakes Cultural and Natural History Museum.  John Adamski, project director, said there are 15 locations in six counties the site selection committee will be visiting. The potential sites were announced Thursday, June 25, in Canandaigua. In Yates County the locations are former Branchport school property, as much space is needed in Keuka Lake State Park, the Keuka Lake Outlet in Dresden and 150 acres of the Morton Salt Property in Himrod. In Schuyler County the potential location is 113 acres of county owned land in Orange on Chambers Road.  Adamski said he came up with the idea for a Finger Lakes museum after visiting the Blue Mountain Lake Museum and the WILD Center in the Adirondacks in the spring of 2008. He said he wondered why the Finger Lakes region did not have something like that. Being a part time writer, Adamski wrote an article for “Living in the Finger Lakes” suggesting just that: a museum about the Finger Lakes. He said the magazine liked the idea and did a poll to get readers’ opinions. Several hundred liked it, with just one negative comment. Read More ...

Marinas are optimistic, but weather isn't helping
FINGER LAKES—The summer boating season is here and marina owners are wondering if this summer will be like last year.  “Due to weather, things are looking slow,” said Cheryl Bowers, with East Bluff Harbor in Penn Yan, about how the year looks thus far.  “Weather is hurting us more than anything,” said Don Roberts Jr., owner of Glen Harbor Marina in Watkins Glen.  In Geneva at Roy’s Marina, Larry Japp said business has been down because of the weather this year compared to last year. However, for Memorial Day weekend, he said it was “three days of solid busy.”  “I don’t think people decided it was summer until last week,” said George Jamison, owner of Jamison Marine in Campbell, who sells boats to people in the area. “(The season) doesn’t start until July 4.”  Bowers added, “in our books it’s not really summer yet.”  In some way or another, marinas and boat sellers are still seeing people spending money on boating. Japp said the last three years the Geneva marina has been pretty much booked, most from returning customers. Read More ...
It's new, an old-fashioned store | Watkins Glen, Jim Guild
It's new, an old-fashioned store
WATKINS GLEN—Behind paper-shrouded windows, the storefront at the corner of Franklin and Third Streets is a hive of orchestrated activity. One group of people, purposeful as Santa’s elves, is setting up displays and arranging the front part of the store. Behind a curtain of hanging tarps further back, contractors, including his son, Jamie Guild, are painting, finishing floors, installing air conditioning and readying additional retail space.  On July 4, the doors will officially open on Jim Guild’s new enterprise, the Seneca Lake General Store. This is the third change of name and, Guild believes, the most descriptive—and he’s eagerly anticipating the excitement and sheer fun of the adventure.  The store was partly inspired by the magnificence of the building, a former hardware store built by the Peele family in 1897. Guild’s tour of the structure begins in its cellar, a solidly-built brick and stone foundation one contractor estimates would hold a building up for a thousand years. The cellar, like the second and third floors above the street, holds pallets of merchandise waiting to be unpacked and offered for sale. Read More ...
