Area post office hours will change
FINGER LAKES—The U.S. Postal Service has announced changes as of last Wednesday, May 9, that would cut the hours of many rural post office branches.  According to the postal service, these proposed changes will be further studied and comments gathered. The agency said the new strategy would be implemented over a two-year, multi-phased approach and would not be completed until September 2014. However, no additional information is available on when specific branches would be affected.  A number of area rural post offices were included on the list that would have hours cut. The biggest proposed change would be limiting weekday hours of some branches from eight to four. The U.S. Postal Service is considering that for Reading Center, Rock Stream, Tyrone, Wayne, Himrod, Lakemont, Bradford, Cayuta, Dresden and Bellona.  Two other area post offices will be reduced to six hours: Hector and Burdett. Read More ...

Dundee changes roofing project construction date
DUNDEE—The Dundee Central School board of education postponed roof work on the district building from this summer to next year, 2013.  Board President Jim Koehler said the change was approved at the Thursday, May 10, school board meeting. Originally, the district planned to replace parts of the roof at the elementary school and district wing this summer. However, over the winter workers discovered cold air was leaking into the building. Business Manager Melissa Lawson said they found openings through interior load bearing walls of the high school attic in April.  Koehler said there isn’t any immediate danger, but the walls will need to be improved next summer with the roof work. He added some parts of the school are open to the attic, letting in cold air and increasing heating costs. Koehler said insulation has shifted over the years or there just wasn’t any insulation at all. Read More ...
County approves eight district plan
County approves eight district plan
SCHUYLER COUNTY—The Schuyler County Legislature’s redistricting committee approved a reworked eight district plan at the committee meeting held on Monday, May 14. The redistricting committee meeting immediately followed the regular meeting of the legislature. The other plan in consideration at the meeting was the five district plan, which would have eliminated three legislative seats and therefore required voter approval through a referendum.  The new eight district plan, dubbed plan “8D With Roads” by Cornell Cooperate Extension of Schuyler County planning director Rocky Kambo, pairs Watkins Glen with the northern portion of the town of Dix rather than with southwest Hector as set out in plan “8B.”  Southwest Hector is then combined with the northern half of the town of Montour, with southern Montour being paired with southern Dix. Kambo also prepared two other eight district plans attempting to separate Watkins Glen from southwest Hector; however, the population disparity between those proposed districts was near or above 10 percent. The population distribution disparity with plan 8D is around four percent. Read More ...

Authorities arrest three in multiple burglaries
STEUBEN COUNTY—Authorities across four counties have made three arrests connected to burglaries in Schuyler, Steuben, and Yates Counties, Thursday, May 10, and Friday, May 11.  The sheriff’s departments from Steuben, Yates, Schuyler, and Livingston Counties; the New York State Police; and the Hornell Police Department investigated and made arrests that resulted from a series of daylight burglaries, which included the town of Tyrone.  The Steuben sheriff’s office said the burglaries occurred over several months in the three counties and appeared to be connected in the method of entry and type of property being stolen (jewelry, money, electronics, and firearms).  Authorities said a routine traffic stop in Lima (Livingston County) on May 9, led to the recovery of stolen property linked to one of burglaries.  The report said the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department also gathered information from an incident that occurred on May 9 in Tyrone, linking a suspect to the series of burglaries.  Throughout last Thursday, law enforcement officials investigated several leads.  The Steuben sheriff’s office said the first arrest was of Todd R. Briglin, 41, N. Main Street Cohocton, May 10. Read More ...

ALBANY—Virginia “Ginny” Houseknecht of Watkins Glen, a long-time area Cornell Cooperative Extension educator and leader, and founder of the Southern Tier Parkinson’s Disease Support Group, was honored as a “Woman of Distinction” by the New York State Senate, Tuesday, May 15, in Albany.  The Senate’s “Women of Distinction” program, which began in March to coincide with Women’s History Month in New York state, allows senators statewide to select one honoree from their respective legislative districts for this distinguished, statewide tribute.  For 35 years until her retirement in 2005, Houseknecht served as the Family and Consumer Sciences Program Leader for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County. She is known across the Southern Tier for her leadership and research-based education in food sciences, nutrition and health, parenting, and financial management.  Shortly after her retirement, Houseknecht was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Devastated, yet wanting to do something positive to help others, in 2006 she established the Southern Tier Parkinson’s Disease Support Group with the endorsement and strong support of the Schuyler County Office for the Aging and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Read More ...

HAMMONDSPORT—The Keuka Lake Players, for the first time, will be performing one of Shakespeare’s best writings, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” this weekend in Hammondsport.  The play revolves around the adventures of four young lovers, a group of amateur actors, and the mischievous fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest.  The story takes place in midsummer, featuring Hermia (Rose DeCamp) & Lysander (Jesse Messmer) and Helena (Ariana Manikas) & Demetrius (Josh Messmer).  Their romantic intrigues are confused and complicated still further by entering the forest where Oberon (David Scott), the King of the Fairies and his Queen, Titania (Kim Jacobs), preside and where Oberon’s mischievous servant, Puck (Casey Hall), is always happy to meddle in mortal matters for his own amusement. Read More ...

Committee recommends staying with 14 legislators
Committee recommends staying with 14 legislators
YATES COUNTY—Yates currently has 14 legislature members and the redistricting committee for the county suggests that number remain the same. During a special meeting on Tuesday, May 1, the group decided to make the recommendation to the county’s government operations committee.  The redistricting committee was formed this year to address the issue of reviewing legislative representation and making sure the number of districts coincides with the 2010 census information. As requested by the N.Y. State Supreme Court, the number of legislators must depend on a county’s population. Each district must have a 10 percent variance (its population can be no more than 10 percent greater than all other districts in the county).  Currently, the 14 members of the county legislature represent a total of four districts. District I (which covers Italy, Middlesex, and Jerusalem) has four legislative members. District II (Benton, Potter, and Torrey) has three representatives. District III (Milo 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6) has four members. District IV (Barrington, Milo 4, and Starkey) has three representatives on the legislature.  While the committee is requesting there still be 14 legislators, the recommendation does involve a change regarding district representation. Read More ...

New president sets path for Keuka College
KEUKA PARK—Saying that “we are obliged to reconsider a liberal arts education in a digital, connected world,” Jorge L. Díaz-Herrera was inaugurated as the new Keuka College president, Friday, May 4.  In remarks after being invested as the College’s 19th president, Dr. Díaz-Herrera encouraged the faculty of this “great institution to create the liberal arts curriculum for the 21st century.” The speech was part of day-long events celebrating the inauguration.  “What if we were to integrate computational methods seamlessly across the curriculum?” said the president, a native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela. “What if we were to produce criminal justice experts who solved cybercrime, nurses proficient in medical informatics, and English majors fluent in digital storytelling?”  An education with a liberal arts base “allows us to be able to address difficult, global, complex issues by allowing us to place this knowledge in context without compartmentalization,” said Díaz-Herrera. “This is an education that unique places like Keuka can provide, and it’s one of the reasons that drew me to the job.”  He has also spearheaded a campus-wide, long-range strategic planning effort. One of the first outcomes of that work is a new mission statement. Read More ...

Celebrating the Finger Lakes' famous Riesling
FINGER LAKES—Wineries along Seneca and Keuka Lakes are celebrating one of the areas most notable wines this month: Riesling.  Finger Lakes Wine Country and participating wineries are promoting “May is Riesling Month” to bring more attention to the wine that in turn is getting the Finger Lakes recognized. Morgen McLaughlin, president of Finger Lakes Wine Country, said Riesling is grown more than any of the other nearly 40 different wine varieties produced in the Finger Lakes. She said there are more than 1,000 acres in production. Wine and Grape Foundation Executive Director Jim Trezise said Riesling makes up about 10 percent of all grapes produced in the Finger Lakes.  The microclimate conditions and the slate soils that are so special to the Finger Lakes are exactly what make Riesling thrive here. The wineries of the Finger Lakes continue to be internationally recognized for their award-winning Rieslings in such publications as Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Food & Wine, Wine & Spirits, and Decanter.  Many of the region’s Rieslings have won many prestigious medals at wine competitions like Riesling du Monde, or Rieslings of the World, in the Alsace region of France. Read More ...

Watkins passes budget without tax increase
WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen Board of Trustees unanimously approved the 2012-2013 village budget at the regular meeting held on April 30, 2012. The budget allows for total appropriations of $2,376,093 and calls for a tax rate of $8.10 per $1,000 of assessed value. The village anticipates generating $1,191,320 in revenue during the upcoming fiscal year. The tax rate is unchanged from the 2011-2012 budget which results in a total tax levy increase of $1,936.   The largest single expense in the budget is for “Police – Personal Services” which will cost the village $261,775, this is followed by medical insurance at a cost of $200,000, and “Police & Fireman Retirement” at $101,968. The biggest revenue generator for the village, besides property taxes, is the Clute Park campground which is projected to bring in $270,000, followed by non property tax revenue from the county of $250,000 and fire protection services paid for by surrounding municipalities, which will generate $218,635 in revenue.  Mayor Mark Swinnerton thanked the board, the department heads and village staff for their many hours of work, “with everyone’s input we were able to have net zero tax rate increase with no cuts to services.” He added thanks, “for all of the departments for looking for ways to do things differently than we are right now without losing services.” Read More ...
New Urbana board starts eviction process again
New Urbana board starts eviction process again
KEUKA LAKE—The Urbana town board, with new members elected last year, are starting the court process again for eviction of the Keuka Maid.  Urbana Supervisor John Webster, who started this year, said the last court date for the eviction was in December 2011. Webster explained the judge said he was unable to hear any charges and no decision was made at that time. He added the town board has to “start all over,” but no future court date has been set yet. Webster said the town board has decided to remove the boat from the dock through the court process.  Following federal safety changes in 2006, the Keuka Maid was unable serve commercially because the owner, Robert Pfuntner, did not complete an inspection. Pfuntner had an agreement with the town allowing the boat to remain at the dock that was extended each month until June 2009. After that last extension, the Urbana town board filed for eviction proceedings. Webster added that since there is no longer any agreement, the board has forgone charging or fining the boat for being there. Read More ...
